As the weather gets colder and wetter, and the days shorter, it is nice to find some family fun inside that allows the kids to get some energy out. Recently, on a chilly Sunday afternoon, I took my girls to the Sloan Museum exhibit at the Courtland Mall. It was part of a playdate organized by the Mid-Michigan Moms group, so there were several other kids and mommas too! We spent over two and a half hours together, exploring and playing with friends.
This featured exhibit area is always changing and provides a great opportunity for your family to experience an interactive adventure without the big price of a larger museum. My kids enjoyed seeing the Wild Kratts: Creature Power television show come to life. It is based on animals and the natural habitats they live in. The kids were able to participate in a scavenger hunt and jump, run, swing, and slide just like animals do!
The second half of the exhibit is all about music. Rock U: The Institute of Rock ‘n Roll is an impressive hands-on area for both children and adults. It is geared towards the older kids, but my 4 and 5-year-old still enjoyed playing the instruments, pretending to be DJ’s and looking at some cool costumes.
I think a family with children of any age would enjoy these current installations. Both are in place until January 20, 2019. There is something for everyone and it’s not always easy to please everyone in a group, no matter what age! It’s a fun outing for families who want to learn and interact together.
Surrounding the exhibit are many classical cars, a nod to the rich history of the Vehicle City. As you walk past all of the cars, don’t forget to make your way to the very back of the museum space. Hidden away is a bonus, indoor playland complete with a full-size playhouse, tables for eating, an activity area for puzzles and games, a smaller toddler climber and a cool Farmers’ Market food area. This space alone is a wonderful place to take kids to play, pretend and run around.
Another one of the many reasons I like this space is the mindful way it caters to families. There is a nursing room for moms and babies, as well as a family bathroom. The museum was very bright and clean, and the staff is super friendly. There is even a great gift shop by the ticket entrance and an extensive coat hook area, so you don’t have to lug those around.
