Meet Heather: A Working Mom from Lapeer, with a Passion for the Outdoors & Holistic Living!

Hello! My name is Heather Shalayko, I was born and raised in Oxford. I have an amazing husband named Steven. Recently, my husband and I built our first home in Lapeer! We started dating when we were eighteen and have been together for almost ten years. We got married this past August and it was a perfect fairytale, woodland wedding!

We spent 10 days in Alaska for our honeymoon and brought two couples with us – some of our best friends – and spent the days hiking, fly fishing, and exploring!! #BuddyMoon We figured we would have more fun hiking and adventuring with our friends and I’m so happy we brought them with us!! We were able to do so much more by splitting costs with two other couples.

You will learn that I love ALL things in nature and my family thinks I’m a total hippie! I love using essential oils, herbs, making my own non-toxic cleaning supplies, lotions, and bath bombs, and of course shopping at the Flint Farmers’ Market

Steven and I have a very energetic four year old named Mackenzie. She is the love of our lives and has brought us more joy than we ever imagined. She loves rock climbing {we built her a rock wall in our basement for Christmas!}, running, hiking, catching frogs, and playing doctor with our two dogs Bear {a black Lab} and Duke {a German Shepherd}.

We also have 25 chickens; this is a new addition and I’m still learning how to be a chicken mom! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Our family of three is very busy. My husband also works full-time and loves to play hockey and mountain bike. I work full-time at a non-profit in Flint. I’m also finishing my Masters at U of M {3 classes left, thank God!}, and I’m an ambassador for Hike it Baby! Like I said, I love all things outdoors and I’m passionate about getting families outside with their children! It’s so hard, yet important to take the time to “unplug” and enjoy your family in nature!

I’m also a foodie, I love to teach cooking classes, this is a small part of my job but by far my FAVORITE thing I do with families. Watching families become empowered together by trying new healthy recipes is immeasurable.

I look forward to talking with all of you and sharing my love of holistic homemaking, nutrition, breastfeeding, exercise, nature, children, crazy mom life, and everything in-between!
