As a homeschool family, we try to learn about, celebrate, and observe any and all holidays. Whether it be National Chocolate Ice Cream Day, St. Patrick’s Day, or Earth Day, we take a few moments to learn of each holiday’s history and find a few fun ways to incorporate these occasions into our day.
What is Earth Day and when is it observed?
According to earthday.org Earth Day is:
Every year on April 22Nd, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement.
beginning in 1970, earth day gave a voice to an emerging public consciousness about the state of our planet
Here are five free and easy ways our family will be learning about and observing Earth Day:
- We’ll start by learning a bit about the history of Earth Day by checking out a few of these resources:
- Read about the history of Earth Day with National Geographic Kids
- Read and discuss Earth Day with resources from National Geographic
- Next, we’ll read a book or watch a short video or two. Here are links to a few good ones:
- Play a game:
- Use our creativity to make a craft or project. Here are a few ideas:
- Make your own paper
- Recycle plastic egg cartons to make a fun necklace or keychain
- Make and distribute native seed bombs
- Then we’ll get outside and go for a walk, do a scavenger hunt, or plant a tree!
