Have you thrown a joint birthday party for your children? Somehow in the blink of an eye, my youngest turned five and she is ready for kindergarten. It also meant it was time for her to have her first friend’s birthday party.
However, the summer schedule fills up quickly and her brother’s birthday is only three weeks before. So, we decided to have a joint birthday party for my son and daughter.
While I would love to throw each of my kids their own birthday parties and shower them with the attention they each deserve, it is simply not possible. Do I feel some mom guilt over this? Of course!
Luckily, I’ve had some practice with joint birthday parties! And I tend to go all out when it comes to my children’s birthday parties. Decorating, a color scheme, themed food, you name it!
When they were younger, Mom still got to pick the theme and went with “Pirate and Princess”. This year they picked their own. My son wanted a superhero party and my daughter chose Disney Princess.
Finding a joint birthday party invite was easy thanks to Etsy and Disney’s rights to both Marvel and the Princesses.
Decorations, are also simple, a quick search on Amazon, and I found some plates, tablecloths, and birthday banners.
Coming up with the superhero and princess-themed menu proved a little more challenging. Luckily there are so many places on the internet to get inspiration.
I wanted to keep the meal simple since I’d have many little kids. I also wanted to incorporate healthy options along with the sweet treats.
For the Princess themed foods, I went with:
- Aurora’s Berries (mixed berries)
- Pocahontas’s popped corn (popcorn)
- Snow White’s non-poison apples (apple slices)
- Ariel’s fish friends (goldfish)
- Fairy Godmother’s magic wands (chocolate dipped pretzels)
- Alice’s Tea Party Cookies (cookies)

For the superhero-themed food, we had:
- Spider-Man’s New York Pizza (pizza)
- Captain America’s Shield (Uncrustables)
- Aquaman’s Fish Friends (goldfish)
- Thor’s Hammer (cheese and pretzels sticks)

Of course, little kids can’t go to a joint birthday party without coming home with a goodie bag!
However, no parent likes it when their child comes home from a party with little trinkets that get lost, eaten by the dog, or need to be thrown away the very next day.
So for our superheroes’ gift bags, I chose to fill them with superhero masks that the kids could re-wear at home when they play dress up. I also found punch balloons with the says “Wham” or “Pow” on them. Perfect for our crime-fighting heroes.
For the princess bags, of course, it had to have a crown. I also found Disney princess tattoos.
Overall the party was a blast. Both kids had fun with their friends despite the rain. Neither felt bad about having to share their party with their sibling and not get their own. Plus now mom can rest easy until the planning begins for next year’s birthdays.
