A Genesee County Mom’s Guide to July

 

Where has time gone?  We are in July – more than half way through this year! 

We aren’t thinking about back-to-school just yet, so take a look at this list we’ve complied of things to do in Genesee County this month!

Take a look below! We’ve divided each week into tabbed sections, and made a list of FREE and PAID events happening throughout the month! We can’t wait to hear all about your July adventures in + around Genesee County!

FREE EVENTS

July 1st:  By a show of hands, how many of you have participated in a Kids Workshop at the Home Depot?  We love this monthly event, so it is worth sharing again.  Check out the Home Depot nearest to you for a Bug House workshop!  Be sure to register ahead of time and get your craft, apron, certificate, workshop pin and snack.

July 1st:  Ok, so last month, we discovered that Michaels has an awesome crafty calendar every month!  We participated in the MAKEbreak Canvas Paint Splatter in June and had so much fun!  This month brings a MAKEbreak Apparel Paint Splatter, where your child(ren) can make wearable art on a t-shirt, tote bag or shoes!  You buy the apparel item of your choice and bring it to the class and all other supplies are provided free of charge!

July 2nd:  Accomplish two things this morning!  Hosted by Grand Blanc Farmers Market, start your day off with Yoga at the Grand Blanc Farmers Market and do a little shopping for some fresh fruit and vegetables before you leave.

July 5th:  Find your zen and claim your space in a peaceful place – Pavilion 1 in Flushing County Park!  Family Yoga with Lois will begin at 7:15p.  Bring a yoga mat or a blanket and wear comfy clothes.  Get ready to get you and your kids active, increase flexibility and relieve stress!

EVENTS WITH A FEE

July 1st:  Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Junction are Getting Ready for the Independence Day Celebration!  Come out and learn about the 19th century traditions as the Village prepares for Independence Day.  Crafts for kids and special prices for carousel rides!

July 2nd:  We have been looking for a farm to take our daughter to and I think I found the perfect spot!  Join us at Upland Hills Farm for Summer Sundays!  Here’s your chance to meet all the farm animals, take a hayride and if you are so brave, even MILK A COW!  Pack a picnic lunch and we’ll see you there!

July 4th:  Join Genesee County Parks for an Independence Day Celebration at Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad.  This has always proved to be a day of fun in the past, and I expect the same this year.  The day will be filled with lots of fun games, an old fashioned ice cream social, face painting and a flag retirement ceremony.

July 4th:  Flint Institute of Music presents a Musical Independence Day with “May the Fourth be with You” at Atwood Stadium.  The Flint Symphony Orchestra will present the music of Star Wars, along with a selection of patriotic favorites.  Flint Native and American Idol Finalist, La Kisha Jones will perform the National Anthem.  You’ll get the perfect send off after this concert with a dazzling fireworks display presented by the Flint Downtown Development Authority.

July 7th:  For-Mar Nature Preserve & Arboretum is hosting Treehouse Story Time:  Butterflies.  Best suited for ages 2 and up, your family is encouraged to meet at the Visitor Center and share in the love of reading and nature with books, songs and crafts!

July 7th:  We cannot get enough of these Food Trucks!  Head over to Grand Blanc High School for the First Fridays Food Truck Festival!

July 8th – July 9th:  Bring your child(ren) out for a day at Crossroads Village.  There will be lots of activities to do, including jump rope, water play, crafts and more!  Huckleberry Playtime is sure to be a hit this Summer!

July 8th:  Come out to the Oakland County Farmers Market for the Food Truck Rally!  What better way to celebrate Summer than the Farmers Market and Food Trucks!

FREE EVENTS

July 15th:  Learn about tree tapping from Don, the beekeeping guy, as you hear the legend of Maple Syrup Making at the Goodrich Branch of the GDL.  After class, enjoy a sweet treat of ice cream topped with sweet maple syrup!

July 15th:  Take a stroll through the newly renovated downtown Fenton area while taking in all that the Fenton ArtWalk has to offer!  Visual art, live music, entertainment, children’s activities and more are all a part of what this day has to offer!

July 10th:  Join the Bat Conservation as they demonstrate how to Build a Bat House at the Fenton-Winegarden Branch of the Genesee District Library.  Bats play an important role in our ecosystem and controlling insect populations.  Learn about what type of bats will likely visit your newly constructed bat house and how to attract them.

July 14th:  Hosted by Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce, come out and enjoy Concerts in the Park:  Magic Bus tonight!  Bring your blankets or lawn chairs and family and enjoy FREE face painting and balloon twisting, music, concessions and Cook’s Farm Dairy ice cream!

July 14th:  A fan favorite, for sure!  Or at least one of my favorites – especially when I get to watch it for FREE!  Hosted by Communities First, Inc., come out to Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad for Grease – Movies Under the Stars.  Bringing together a diverse group of people from all around the State, enjoy a movie, games, activities and snacks in a safe and family friendly environment!

July 14th – July 16th:  Our Lady of Lebanon is hosting its 10th Annual Mid-East Festival.  Food, games, entertainment, fireworks and more!  A $3 parking fee is being charged, but admission is FREE.  Check out the full schedule of events here.

EVENTS WITH A FEE

July 9th:  Do you have a web-loving child in your home?  Here is the perfect Sunday morning for them.  Comic Explosion in Lapeer is hosting a Spider-Man Movie Party at NCG Cinema’s!

July 12th:  Today, you can’t put a price on safety.  Join World Martial Arts College at the Fenton Community & Cultural Center for a S A F E Self Defense Workshop.  This is a 2 hour course to help you Secure yourself Avoid trouble Flee if possible Engage if necessary.

July 14th – July 16th:  Bull riding, bronc bucking, steer wrestling and more!  Venture over to Gaines and enjoy a family friendly event at the 15th Annual Gaines Community Rodeo!

July 15th:  The Flint & Genesee Convention and Visitors Bureau (FGCVB) is proud to host it’s 5th “Be a Tourist in Your Home Town” today!  For just $1, Flint and Genesee County residents, along with non-residents, will have an opportunity to see what our awesome community has to offer!  You will receive a Passport to more than 30 attractions!  Your Passport will also get you discounts at many Downtown restaurants!

FREE EVENTS

July 18th:  Join us at the Montrose-Jennings Branch of the Genesee District Library for a Galaxy Glitter Slime class!  Make a borax-free, sparkly, stretchy slime that looks just like the swirls of a galaxy!

July 18th:  Family Nights out are amazing!  And even more so when they are FREE!  Come on out to Hess-Hathaway Park for Park It Family Fun Night! Waterford.  There will be lots to enjoy, including a concert, kids activities, giveaways and a movie under the stars!

July 20th:  Does the teenager in your house want a night out?  Unhook for an educational event at Flint Park Lake Pavilions, Winthrop Blvd for Landscape ID.  You will have an opportunity to explore the wonders and diversity of plant life found at Flint Park Lake Park

FREE EVENTS

July 25th:  Do you have a child who is creative and is ready to put their imagination to work?  Acting Out With Flint Youth Theatre is where you want to be!  Join a FYT Educator to create characters and stories from literature and their own imaginations, while working on acting techniques, teamwork, confidence and responsibility.

July 29th:  Tractors on the Bricks will be Downtown Flint at the Flat Lot on the corner of Saginaw and Kearsley Streets.  Join us for an Antique Tractor Parade at 10a.  Tractors will then be on display for you to look at until 4p.

July 29th:  I know Summer feels like it is just getting started, however, it is never too early to think back-to-school.  Today’s MAKEbreak session at Michaels in Bling Back to School!  Bring a back-to-school item of your choosing (think t-shirt, locker mirror, pencil case) to class and bling it out with the free supplies on hand!

July 30th:  July is National Park and Recreation Month and Genesee County Parks is doing its part to bring the celebration to all of us for FREE!  Join them at Bluebell Beach for bounce houses, ladder ball, bubbles and more!  You’ll also have an opportunity to talk to Park Rangers and Naturalists to get an understanding of the role they play in our park system  After learning what they do, you get to make your own Ranger outfit!

EVENTS WITH A FEE

July 25th:  Do you have a Beatles fan in your home?  Join us at SHOUT!  Beatles Tribute at the Clio Amphitheater tonight!  Enjoy a summer evening outside listening to the best Beatles tribute band in Michigan!

July 25th:  We are so incredibly lucky to live in a community in which we have support from the Medical Community.  Hurley Medical Center is hosting its 8th Annual Miracle Picnic at Sloan Museum.  Come out and support Hurley Children’s Hospital with a family friendly evening you are sure to remember!  Food, fun, entertainment and more with all proceeds benefiting Child Life Services.  We hope to see you there!

July 26th:  Just because it is Summer Vacation doesn’t meaning we need to stop learning!  An event catered to the 4th – 6th graders in your life is being held at the Sloan Museum this morning.  Come out and learn about Michigan’s Lighthouses, including the different types, the way they are designed and why they are so important.  Your child(ren) will also have an opportunity to decorate their own lighthouse to take home!

July 29th:  Fun for all ages is sure to be had at the Davison Remax Real Estate Team’s Remax Glow Event on Lake Callis tonight!  Come out for a volleyball tournament, balloon rides, Food Trucks, glow in the dark activities for the kids and more!
