A Genesee County Mom’s Guide to April

Can you smell it in the air?  Can you feel it in the air?  April is here! SPRING HAS SPRUNG!

Spring Break, Easter, Passover and Earth Day are on the calendar this April!  With so many “holidays”, there are lots events happening around Genesee County that I cannot wait to share with you! 

Look at all the eggs! This was our first time attending the DMB Eggstravaganza last year, and it was so much fun!

I stumbled across something amazing recently and cannot wait to take my little one!  And did I mention this is a FREE, ongoing activity for you/your kids?!  Kids Skate Free is awesome!  They have put together such an awesome program for kids, providing a caring and stimulating environment where kids are encouraged to be kids and have FUN!  Participating roller-skating rinks are limited in Genesee County, with only Rollhaven Skating Center in Flushing being on the list, but it’s worth the sign-up if you are close enough.  Your kids will have a blast!

It’s here!  Are you staying local and celebrating with a Staycation in the Mitten State?  We’re staying home this year for Spring Break and have found a couple of things to do around town to keep us, well, my daughter busy.  Check it out:

Grand Blanc Gymnastics Co is offering their yearly Spring Break Camp!  Welcoming kiddos between 3 and 12 years old, they have a Beach Week planned full of gymnastics, art & craft and so much more.  All happening Monday, April 3rd through Thursday, April 6th.

Flint YMCA Camp Boomerang.  Spring Break Camp happening at the Pierson Road location.  Happening Monday, April 3rd through Friday, April 7th, this camp is designed for kids between 3 and 13, this is an opportunity for your child to learn and grow through new experiences.

Family Coloring Night! The Genesee District Library at Beecher-Vera B. Rison is offering this fun evening. Coloring isn’t just for the young!  Did you know that coloring is beneficial for adults, too, helping to relieve stress?  According to Elena Santos of the Huffington Post in an article dated October 13, 2014, “the practice generates wellness, quietness and also stimulates brain areas related to motor skills.”  You and your child(ren) can enjoy snacks and a fun night of coloring together!

FREE Zumba Class. Hosted by Southern Lakes Parks & Recreation at the Fenton Community Center.  Have you been wanting to try Zumba but have been unsure?  This coming from the girl that has no moves, take advantage of this awesome event being offered!  You will not be disappointed!

Breastfeeding Basics. Are you a new or expecting mama currently breastfeeding, or planning to breastfeed?  Do you have questions about breastfeeding? Babies R Us brings in a Lactation Consultant from the Genesee County Health Department to help answer your breastfeeding questions.  I found this class to be an awesome start to the laundry list of questions I would come to have about breastfeeding.  Check it out!

Live Farm Animals. Spend your Saturday at the Burton Memorial branch of the Genesee District Library.  This is a hands-on program for the whole family to enjoy, featuring goats, chickens, doves, geese and more!

Egg-stravaganza. The Davison branch of the Genesee District Library is hosting this family fun event!  This is a special Easter-prepping event for kids of all ages!

Breakfast with the Bunny. My daughter is so excited for this!  Cops & Robbers in Flushing is hosting a second breakfast!  Pancakes and pictures with the Easter Bunny himself!  Maybe we’ll see you there!

Preschool Yoga. Miss Katrina, a certified kids’ yoga instructor, will host children, ages 2 – 8, for  at the Grand Blanc-McFarlen branch of the Genesee District Library. Bring a mat and help your child(ren) find their Zen during this half hour of relaxation!

Easter Egg Hunt! Join Springfield Township Parks & Recreation for their 19th Annual event.  Held rain or shine, this outdoor egg hunt is sure to be filled with lots of eggs, candy, toys and prizes!  Not to mention an appearance by the Easter Bunny, so you’ll want to be sure to have your camera ready!  Tickets will not be sold at the event, so please make sure to register ahead of time!

Easter Crafts for Kids at the Davison Farmers’ Market. This is always fun for both kids and adults!  Your child(ren) can get their craft on, you can browse local vendors and then grab lunch before heading out!

DMB Easter Eggstravaganza. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t as equally excited about the as my daughter!  Our Sister Site, Detroit Moms Blog, is hosting its 2nd Annual Easter Eggstravaganza at Total Sports Complex in Farmington.  Now, I realize that this is not Genesee County, but we are all about supporting and promoting our mamas over at DMB!  Check it out if you are able and maybe we will see you there!

Captain’s Club at Woodfield is hosting their annual Easter Brunch. Seating is limited, but offered at these four times spots: 11, 11:30, 1 and 1:30. Call today to make your reservation for this family fun event! The Easter Bunny will be making an appearance, so don’t forget your camera!

A night of Genealogy. Have you ever wondered where you came from?  Have you wanted your child(ren) to explore their heritage?  Here is the event for you!  The Mt. Morris branch of the Genesee District Library is hosting this intriguing event!  Explore their databases, network with fellow genealogists and get your genealogy questions answered by Librarian Heather VanFleet.  While laptops may be available for your use at this event, you are highly encouraged to bring your own.

Infant CPR & Safety.  As parents, we don’t want to think about this, but, have you ever stopped and thought about what you would do if your child(ren) needed CPR?  Do you know what to do?  Do you need a refresher?  Babies R Us is offering this class delivered by a certified and trained instructor.  This was a must-take in our home before baby arrived for this mama’s piece of mind.  I have no regrets about sitting through this class and learning.  Check it out and see if it is right for you!

Grub and Pub Crawl. How about a date night?  You’re long over-due, aren’t you?  The Davison Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting its 6th Annual Grub and Pub Crawl!  Travel about the Davison area pubs/restaurants sampling food and receiving awesome drink discounts, all while not having to worry about transportation between venues!  Get your tickets ahead of time to guarantee your spot!

Flint Superhero 5k Run & 1K Fun Run. With a new route through Applewood Estates for 2017, the  family fun event is sure to excite!  Beginning at the Flint Farmers’ Market, there will be plenty of family friendly activities throughout the event, not to mention that everyone participating in the 5K & 1K run will receive a special custom finish medal!  Bring your superhero game and let’s hit the streets of Downtown Flint!

Downtown Flint ComiXcon 8. After participating in the Superhero run, Flint Comix is hosting this event  from 9a – 5p at the Flint Farmers’ Market.  Kids 12 and under get in FREE with a paid adult admission of $5.  Follow the event invite for more news and announcements that will be added leading up to the event!

2017 Genesee County Heart Walk. How can you make a positive difference in the lives of your friends, family & co-workers?  Join us to not just walk, but Heartwalk.  Presented by the American Heart Association, join us at the UM-Flint Harding Mott University Center for this annual event!  Did you know that just 10 minutes of play a day can help to reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes later in your child(ren)’s life?  Let’s get moving, Genesee County!  We’ll see you there, “raising heartbeats”!

“Parents as Teachers” Fundraiser and Mom 2 Mom Sale. I think Garage Sale season could be on its way to being in full-swing!  The Perry Center Gym in Grand Blanc is hosting more than 80 tables at this sale.  What better way to sell your child’s outgrown clothes and toys and to buy some “new”, too!
