Meet Rebecca: A farm mom freshly planted in a small town

Hello! I am thrilled to be a contributor for MidMIMB! I take pride in being a SAHM and a homemaker.  My husband and I have been married for 21 years. We met showing livestock in 4-H. We have 4 children. Our oldest just turned 21, he is rocking college life at SVSU. Our second son is nearly 17, he’s a sophomore and a student athlete. Our daughter is 5, she’s so smart I don’t know why she even wants to go to kindergarten. Finally, our baby boy is 2, he gives the best hugs in the whole wide world. No, really.

Our 20th Anniversary at Tahquamenon Falls, my first time to the UP!

My husband works tirelessly to provide for our family. He is an equipment operator locally and a Seabee in the United States Navy Reserve. He has served on two deployments overseas. He is an incredible role model for our sons and the kind of man I hope our daughter finds one day.

I really have “been there/done that”. Because of the age range in my kids, I’m usually currently there doing that. I’ve been a nursing mom, a formula mom, a young mom, a livestock show mom, sports mom, dance mom, working mom, classroom mom. I’ve been a good mom, a bad mom, an inspired mom and tapped out mom. What remains consistent is that I am always a trying mom, a doing my best in this moment mom! A supportive to other moms, mom.  I’ve even been a cow mom once or twice!

This is Suzie, our oldest cow. She’s so fluffy!

I love to read all kinds of books.  I dream of (and work towards) being a published writer.  I enjoy all things “homemaker” including cooking, baking, gardening, sewing and crafting. Cleaning is therapeutic and I believe that less is more. With a farm family of 6, the struggle of cleanliness is real, gals. We spend a great deal of time in the barn with the animals and doing yard work. We love to explore community parks and libraries.  I take advantage of free entertainment as often as we can, which is a challenge in our small community. I’m not a fan of driving, but I’ll travel for music in the park, flea markets, fairs and festivals. I am a 4-H Leader and I volunteer with Farm Bureau. Mid-Michigan is farm country to me, so I am passionate about supporting agriculture. I want to connect people with the roots of their food and the families who grow it.

Our barn is over 100 years old!

Last fall we bought our dream farm in Clifford. We have just enough land to raise a few cows and hogs. We have two miniature horses, a donkey plus an old Lab, a Bloodhound puppy and three cats. The kids will be getting chicks soon and probably some other miscellaneous critters too. Needless to say, we live country life to the fullest.

Our town has a beautiful park, a cool old library and an amazing little restaurant, all we are missing is a stop light. We have a Clifford address although our roots are a few miles south in North Branch. It is a great town, I couldn’t imagine a better place to raise my family. The closest Target is 50 miles away so I don’t get the mom/Target connection. I do get the mom/Amazon connection though!

I tend to offer unsolicited advice too often, but seriously, relax. Your wild, unruly children will grow up and become really neat adults someday. It is hard not to get bogged down in the loneliness, exhaustion, business and drudgery that consumes us at times but this too shall pass, in the blink of an eye.  I look forward to writing for Mid-Michigan Moms Blog!

  1. Awe. I love to see you here. As childhood memories flood my thoughts, this girl is not only one of the coolest farm mom’s ever, she was a rodeo queen. I remember how stunning she was as she ran for the title. The beauty not only raidiated from the outside, she held a depth of selflessness from with in too.
Her kids are some of the luckiest one around as she has a heart of gold and will guide them to great things.
I look forward to all of the great adventure on your dream farm. Kids cows and chaos…some will give you gray hair other will make you drink but none the less these moments shape and define you and your family.

    God Bless your farm;)
