Meet Melody: a full-time mom enjoying small-town living

Hi, I’m Melody. I’m currently hiding away in my room with milk and cookies and if that doesn’t pretty much sum me up, I don’t know what does. I am an introvert through and through and as such, I enjoy low-key, low-crowd activities without a lot of flare or fuss. I suppose that’s how we ended up in little tiny Leonard, a village with a total population count of 403. I love walking to the post office and waving at familiar faces, admiring festive home decor, and telling spooky stories to my kids about the old crumbling mill. Leonard makes me feel like life is simple and safe and I’m proud to live here in our first home.

My husband, Luke, is a one-in-a-million man. He’s intelligent, funny, quirky, kind, and solid gold to the very core. He also drives me absolutely mad and in our six years of marriage, I’ve grown to become so incredibly proud that we continue to choose each other again and again despite the many ways we don’t see eye to eye. I feel blessed to have married a committed family man, a hard worker, and a devoted husband. He’s my kind of guy.

Luke and I have welcomed three wonderful children into our lives. Our firstborn, Noah, was born in Connecticut where we lived early in our marriage and we often joke about shipping him back to boarding school there to reconnect with his roots. We are very happy to be reunited with the Midwest. Noah is five and impresses us daily with his commitment and talent for art and his extremely sweet and sensitive soul.

Where Noah brings the sweet, our second born, Evelyn, brings the spicy. She’s currently completely naked and drumming on her belly and asking me {repeatedly}, Mommy, you like this song?” She moves to the beat of her own drum and it usually works best if we all just take it in stride. Evelyn is exceedingly well-spoken for her age, and I believe she will use her big voice to make big change in our world.

Our last and littlest little is Juniper. Juniper is our first home birth baby, and she’s nicknamed Juno after the Roman goddess of childbirth. At just over three months, we are still getting to know her. What I do know about her so far is that she’s stinking cute, adorably squishy, and totally worthy of love. She’s my luck child, my own little lucky charm.

Despite promises made by my younger feminist self, our family has adopted a fairly traditional lifestyle. Luke brings home the bacon, so to speak, and I fry it up. We decided pretty early on in our marriage that I would stay home with our kiddos, and I feel deeply blessed that we’ve made that situation workable.

As a SAHM, and an introvert at that, it has not always been easy for me to make time and space for my own interests. “Me time” usually involves hiding out in my room or taking a boiling hot shower without little hands reaching under the door. But motherhood also introduced me to my life’s love – birth. Though I currently have a B.A. in Sociology {my first love}, I’ve been slowly moving towards becoming a Certified Nurse Midwife. I suppose at 30, I’m a bit of a late bloomer, but I’ll get there, and firmly believe that anything beautiful is worth waiting for.

So for now, I’m happy to be doing my best investing my time into my children, praying they sprout into kind, considerate, and contributing members of society. In my free time, you can find me admiring birth images or sharing tidbits about my life here. I can’t wait to share more!
