It was almost 10 years ago that my girlfriend and I planned a trip to San Diego, California.
Little did I know, this is where I’d meet my future husband.
My husband, Tom, is originally from Michigan but was living out in San Diego at the time. We met through mutual friends while meeting up on Pacific Beach, a smaller town near San Diego.
I never believed in love at first sight, but we had an instant connection that gave me butterflies. He had long, “hockey hair” {what we Canadians call it} and a great smile.
We talked every day after I left sunny California. About a month after we met, he had the opportunity to move back to Michigan and he jumped on it. He moved back to be closer to me, and our love story finally began.
We got engaged in October of 2013 and got married that December. We got married as soon as possible to start my immigration process.
Fast-forward a year and a half later, and I was finally able to move to Michigan to be with him. Yes, we were not living together as a married couple. It was, by far, a true test of our relationship. But we survived, stronger than ever.
Since 2013, we have brought two amazing children into the world: Carter, 3, and Chloe, 6 months. They have changed us immensely and we can’t imagine our world without them.
Being a Canadian living in Michigan definitely has its differences, good and bad. But I’ve been adjusting. It also helps to have a supportive husband and family.
A lot of people ask me questions about the differences between our two countries. If you’re ever curious, just drop me a private message and I’d be happy to chat!
When I’m not working full-time, you can find me spending time with my family, drinking a big glass of wine, catching up on Bravo reality shows or crafting.
