Fall is in the air and it’s time to fall in love with your home decor with these 12 simple fall decorating ideas. Unpack that beautiful fall decor and get in the mood for a fresh, new season. Whether you like to add a touch of the season to every room or choose a few statement pieces, remember these tips are focused on keeping it simple!
- Sort through your decor and donate what you don’t love. This will help keep it simple so you only use the items that are pleasing to your eyes. Your style may change from year to year and that’s OK. Find a nearby spot to donate your unwanted goods in this Mid-Michigan Moms guide.
- Purchase new items if necessary. If you sorted through your items and find yourself with a lot less fall decor you’ll either be fine with your new, smaller stash or will want a few more items. The dollar store and your local craft store are great places to find some new pieces. One year I found some adorable ceramic pumpkins at the dollar store that I use year after year. Consignment shops are also great for finding seasonal decorations on a budget.
- Dress your porch and front door. Mums, pumpkins, and gourds oh my! Stop by your local farmers market and add pick up some mums, pumpkins, and gourds. If your summer flowers are still doing well on your porch let them be. Wait for your summer blooms to fade out before swapping them out for mums. Mums will be available throughout the season so there’s no rush. If you’re interested in purchasing decor you can use year after year purchase some artificial pumpkins and flowers.
- Fill the air with fall scents. Whether you choose to light a candle or diffuse some essential oils fill the air with fresh, fall scents. My personal favorite essential oil blend is 4 drops cinnamon bark and 2 drops of lemon and clove.
- Do a fall DIY project. Create a fall Pinterest board and pin away. A wreath is a great DIY project for fall as are DIY wood porch signs. Check out the Mid Michigan Moms Pinterest page for some fall project ideas.
- Include the kids. Invite them to create a fall craft to display in your home – handprint art and leaf rubbing are fun ways to include unique art around the house. You can also send them outside to find sticks, flowers, leaves, and acorns for a foraged display on the kitchen table. TIP: If you use acorns for any home decor or crafts bake them on a cookie sheet for 1 hour at 350 degrees Fahrenheit to de-bug and sanitize them.
- Add fresh blooms inside and outside. Grab a bunch of sunflowers, small pots of mums, and ornamental cabbages. Spread them through your home or make a large bouquet to brighten up the kitchen. Add gourds and cabbages to your window boxes and in pots for your front porch.
- Create a cozy entrance. Make sure to save a few seasonal pieces for your entryway. If you have a bench near your front door add a seasonal pillow and a light blanket to it. Use everyday items like boots and scarfs in this area too. Sometimes it’s as simple as adding a pumpkin to what you already have!
- Swap out linens. Add some heavier linens in cozy, fall hues to snuggle up with every night. A cute, plaid blanket will do the trick in any room.
- Create a dining room table centerpiece. This is another spot where Pinterest may come in handy. You can use some fresh blooms here or simply add a few pumpkins. Another great idea is to place your seasonal foods- apples and squash in a bowl and set it on the table for a pretty and functional centerpiece.
- Don’t forget the Halloween details. Halloween decor can be as spooky or classy as you desire. If you’re going for spooky include bats, goblins, and ghosts into your fall decor. If you prefer classier Halloween decor add black candlesticks, orange and white pumpkins, and some wooden post ghosts.
- Open the windows. Once you’re all done decorating open the windows and enjoy your cozy, new space. Grabbing some donuts and cider from your favorite apple orchard might not be a bad idea either.
