My five-year-old is an absolute science nut. He loves all things space, animals, plants, and how things work. But, his love of animals and their habitats comes second to none. He was absolutely ecstatic when I told him we were going to see ‘Wonders of the Arctic’ at Longway Planetarium.
He had not yet been to a Planetarium and tends to be a bit hesitant when trying new things, so we turned to Longway’s YouTube channel and found a few videos to help him get acquainted. We also found a trailer for the show and he was sold! ‘When can we go? Are we going to go today? Well, when are we going?!?’
Do you want to check out the trailer too?
Wonders of the Arctic is a documentary that explores how animals and humans have adapted to the ongoing environmental changes in the Arctic. The film has a run time of about 40 minutes, which was perfect for my wiggly boy, and shows a variety of interviews from local scientists, a group of Inuit people native to the land, and features many of the breathtaking land and ocean creatures that call the Arctic home.
Before and after the showing, we were surprised by an amazing fireworks show, a simulated rollercoaster ride through the solar system, a light show, and a tour of the night sky across the almost 53-foot dome.
In addition to the planetarium, we had fun exploring the black light constellations around the interior of the dome, checking out the unique items in the gift shop and reading about other films that were currently being shown and which will be shown in the near future at Longway. We had so much fun at our first family planetarium trip and as Longway is currently showing seven different films, thankfully we won’t have to wait long to return!
