I’m a “be the change I want to see” type of girl.
Looking back, I knew in high school that I wanted to be my own boss. Being the oldest child could have had something to do with it, but honestly, I admired people who had their own business. The reality of it is – it’s hard work, especially if you are working while trying to make your dream a reality. There were times I thought, “This is going to be too much to handle,“ {married, working full-time, and being a mommy to four little people}. But in the words of Russell Wilson‘s father, “Why not you?”
It is great to be motivated and have a vision, but being able to stand strong through the intense trials of being a mom-boss takes perseverance.
It wasn’t long before I started to see how cruel it was in the world of entrepreneurship. Not everyone plays nice in the sandbox. I used to let it stress me out, especially since I believed in playing nice. It started to make me want to throw my dreams away. Being an entrepreneur made me look at myself and realize I had some things to change and make peace with before my dream could grow. I had to learn to be the best version of myself, despite what other people did or said. I didn’t decide to start my own business just for money, but to support women and to be an inspiration. Of course, my days are long and sometimes my nights even longer, but when I help another mom and to see the joy it brings her, it’s all worth it.
One of the best things my husband and I did was invite our kids to join our businesses.
At events they help at our vendor table, they manage materials at home, and give insight to ideas. Our oldest daughter loves baking and has even sold some of her goodies at events. I think that’s one of the best things about being a mom-boss, we are setting an example for our children. We are teaching them that dreams can become a reality and that they can be the exception to the rule. They even ask business-related questions! I’m raising “boss kids” that view the world differently.
You may be wondering, what is my routine to maintain a busy life?
Sometimes it is just organized chaos. Some days are a blur and others work great. I’m still in the process of making things run smoothly, but it’s important to realize it can’t always be perfect. I think that’s how we stall our dreams; we wait for things to be perfect, but the journey can still be great. My biggest obstacle? Cooking! I need to meal prep and have simple recipes instead of quick fixes, so feel free to send me those recipes or start a healthy food service for mom bosses!
As moms, we are hard on ourselves. Two of the biggest dream killers are insecurity and self-doubt, but you can overcome that. Surround yourself with a circle of women that you trust and who will support you. We can have goals and can still be great mothers. Sure there will be days when we are scared to take certain leaps, but if not you who? What is meant for you is for you, embrace it.
