Meet Rebeca, a Mississippi Girl living in a {Midland} Michigan World

Hey y’all! I am Rebeca. I am a Stay at Home Expecting Mom {if that’s a thing} and a Southern Belle all the way from Mississippi. I am a degreed Broadcast Meteorologist, so yes I like to talk about the weather. My other passions include eating food, watching college sports {SEC sports especially} with my husband, and playing with random puppies!

I am happily married to Matt the Michigander who is originally from Manistee, but we both now live in Midland awaiting the arrival of our first baby, Lynn Sofia.

Now how the heck did a Southern Gal end up in Mid-Michigan blogging for Mid-Michigan Moms? Well, I met Matt during our sophomore year of college at MSU {Mississippi State University, not Michigan State} and he got a job offer from DOW Chemical literally the morning of his graduation. We would spend our entire engagement and about 6 months of marriage before I could leave my job in Mississippi and move to Michigan.

A few months after I moved to Michigan, BOOM. I found out I was pregnant and boy, was I surprised or what? I did not really know anyone or what to expect, but thankfully I had a best friend suggest that I look for a mom group in my area. That’s how I came across Mid-Michigan Moms on Facebook {because you know Facebook secretly listens to our conversations}! If there are any moms that have recently moved to Mid-Michigan, I got you! {I know y’all are out there! Don’t be shy! I’m friendly.}

Michigan reminds me so much of where I grew up in Mississippi and I wanted to highlight a few of my favorite things here:

Great Lakes Loons Games: The most fun part of my first summer in Michigan was going to a Loons game with my husband and friends. I saw Jerry/Terry/Garry from Parks and Rec, Stanley from The Office, and became best friends with Lou E. Loon and Rall E. Camel. Games would become our Thursday and Friday night tradition as tickets are always so affordable. The environment is just so much fun!

Larkin Beer Garden: I just loved how Downtown Midland was able to turn a parking lot into a fun area where people could enjoy local beer, play with puppies, and get their babies out of house. There was live music, cornhole games, and local beer. Oh, I can’t forget the food trucks that parked along the street too {uh, hello barbeque mac and cheese and tacos!). If there was a Loons game that same day, we’d just walk those calories off by heading on down to Dow Diamond a few blocks away!

Downtown Detroit: I love escaping Mid-Michigan every so often for a Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings, and Lions game. We don’t have any professional sports teams in Mississippi, so it’s really cool and fun to attend with my husband. Plus, I can always get amazing food like roasted peanuts at games and a good brunch in Downtown Detroit.

Any Local Brewery or Winery {like Grape Beginnings Winery in Midland}: I have to give credit where credit is due y’all: Michigan beer and wine is top-notch. I have been soaking it up maybe a little too much according to my husband, but love to support local businesses! I was actually so fascinated by the brewery and winery market being local here that I wrote a graduate research paper on the sustainability of grapes in Michigan. Fun fact, as our climate continues to warm over time, grapes are one of the few versatile fruits that will adapt with variable weather conditions, so that means we’ll still have our wine 50-100 years from now!

So, hello, mommas! I cannot wait to see what life has to offer us as we go through this journey together called Motherhood!

This Southern Belle has lived in Mid-Michigan with her husband Matt and dog Vader for a few years. They welcomed their first heavenly and saintly baby girl, Lynn Sofia, in May 2020 and are expecting a boy in August. Rebeca is a degreed bilingual meteorologist and has graduated with her Master's Degree in Applied Sciences from Mississippi State (the other MSU). When she is not blogging, you can probably catch Rebeca at a local BWW, reading a book outside when the weather is nice, or eating finding a local dive across Mid-Michigan.
