Meet Courtney, an active mom enjoying the roller-coaster of life!

Hi guys! My name is Courtney, and I am super excited to be a new contributor here at Mid-Michigan Moms blog.  I am a busy mother, wife, and teacher trying to balance all of these roles …and falling short on at least one of them daily.  Good news is that it motivates me to be better the next day. I thrive when I am challenged and busy, and as my Dad has said I “don’t let the grass grow under my feet.”

So where do I begin? I was fortunate to fall head over heels for my husband Matt while we were in high school. We have been riding life’s roller-coaster together ever since. Some days we are gripping on to the handlebar with white knuckles and other days we are laughing with our hands in the air, but we are enjoying the ride together.

I am definitely the “Go! Go! Go!” and he is the “Woah,Woah, Woah,” which seems to be a combination that works well for us. We are celebrating 14 years of marriage this summer, which I am having a hard time wrapping my head around. I have two sunshines that light up my life. My son, Walker, is a charmer that loves competition just as much as his mom. He has yet to find a sport he doesn’t love. My daughter, Tenley, is a rule follower with a determination that is unmatched. They bring me endless amounts of joy while simultaneously draining me of my sanity and energy.

I think my husband and I have unofficially adopted the motto “if we aren’t exhausted…we must not be parenting right.” I am passionate about working with children, and I couldn’t imagine myself not being a teacher. I consider myself lucky to get to interact with so many young people, so I work really, really hard to be a positive influence. I grew up in Genesee County, and LOVE being a Michigan girl.

Our Favorites:

For Mar Nature Preserve:

In my opinion, this is the best place FREE resource that Genesee County has to offer.  We love to go and just walk the trails and check out the wildlife. My kids love to visit the center to learn about Michigan animals and plant species.  They have amazing low-cost classes for younger kids, and they even throw awesome birthday parties.

Ziggy’s Ice Cream:

Every community needs a great local ice cream spot, and Ziggy’s is ours. We love that they offer sooooooo many different kinds of treats. We could visit everyday in the summer and never order the same thing twice.

Rollhaven:

My kids are extremely active, and in the winter they need a place to move. Rollerskating is an awesome activity to burn some energy. Rollhaven offers tons of age-appropriate fun in a family friendly atmosphere.

Crim Festival of Races:

These races showcase the best that Flint has to offer. We have participated in all of the racing events over the years, and have enjoyed the challenges. My kids started off running the Teddy Bear Trot and they graduated to the Michigan Mile last year. They are considering the 5k run for 2018 and we are excited to help them try and reach their fitness goals.

We are definitely a family that values experiences, so you will rarely find us sitting at home, and I can’t wait to share some of our favorite things to do around Genesee County. One of my favorite things is chatting with other parents.  It definitely gives me perspective.  Having kids has made me appreciate that it truly “takes a village.” I look forward to expanding my “village” with this opportunity!
