Meet Cassie, A Huron County Farm Mom

Hello, all! My name is Cassie! I am super excited to be joining the Mid-Michigan Moms contributor team! I guess I am still considered a “new” mom, I have a two-year-old son and my husband and I should be welcoming our second son this April.

Originally, I grew up in south-east Michigan in a super small “village”. By super small, I mean super small. It was one of those places where everyone knew everyone, and you couldn’t help but see someone you knew at the local grocery store. Don’t get me wrong; it wasn’t a terrible thing, but did I love it? No, but I think it prepared me for when I moved to Huron County with my husband years later.

Once I graduated high school – which feels like FOREVER ago. I decided I wanted to get the heck out of that small town, and I packed up and moved to East Lansing, where I attended Michigan State University. When I first started, I was an engineering major – I am NOT saying there is anything wrong with being an engineering major, but it was not for me. I thought long and hard {really, like two seconds because I was in college} about what I wanted to do when I was older. I changed my major to Animal Science, thinking that I wanted to be a Veterinarian because everyone loves animals, right? Well, life showed me again that was not even remotely close to being cut out for that! Why do I say that? Well, I loved my classes and everything that came with them until our first necropsy {animal autopsy}. Long story short, I ended up passed out on the floor, and it was mortifying! Being a year into my college journey, I didn’t want to change my major again, so I changed my “focus.” I went from a pre-vet specialization to production animal agriculture. I had finally found my passion! I ended up meeting people and making lifelong friendships, learned so much along the way, and I was even able to participate in two collegiate teams where I traveled and got to see lots of fancy dairy cows and farms. As I was nearing my senior year at MSU, I was lucky enough to meet a great guy who treated me with respect and kindness. I knew fairly early on that I was going to marry that man.

I met Eric in March of 2012. We were engaged a little over a year later, and EVERYONE thought we were crazy! I wasn’t even graduated when he proposed. I remember telling my family, and you could hear the shock over the phone. Don’t get me wrong, it was soon replaced with excitement. My husband, Eric, grew up in Sebewaing, way up in the thumb. He is a Dairy Farmer and loves every second of it. Being that he knew he would return to his family farm, that meant that we would be planting our roots in his home town. Since I had also graduated with a degree in agriculture, it was a perfect fit.

I was fortunate enough to find a job that I love. I am a Crop Consultant for Michigan Sugar Company. What that means is I get to work with an incredible team of other consultants for the company, local sugarbeet growers and members of the cooperative. I also get to be outside walking fields and diagnosing issues within fields. To me, this is one of the most fulfilling things I could have done. I get to consult and grow relationships with local people, and it truly is fantastic.

My husband and I got married in the fall of 2014 on a beautiful day surrounded by friends and family. We are blessed with tons of support and love throughout our marriage. We were fortunate enough to add our son, Tanner, to our family in 2017. He has been a blessing! Being a farm wife is so much more demanding and emotionally draining than I ever would have thought. I give so much credit to every other farm wife/mom out there because I live it first hand. I didn’t think too much of it when we first got married, but over time the long hours and time my husband spent away from home was tough but worth it. With the addition of Tanner, it got even harder. I can go into those details some other time, but again, long story short, I am so thankful to have my wonderful son at home with me on those long nights. To say we are close is an understatement.

I love every second of being a mom and a wife. I never really thought this was the life that I was cut out to lead. I was never one of the babysitting, kid loving, let-me-hold-your-baby types. It is a hundred percent different when you have your own little humans and the love you feel. I am so excited to share my journey with you all as we transition to a family of four!
