“Mommy, Can Santa Claus Get Coronavirus?” : Christmas During a Pandemic

Can Santa Claus get Coronavirus? COVID is complicated, especially for a 5-year-old. My little man understands he has to wear a mask at school and in public to keep healthy and from spreading “the virus”. He also understands that we can’t go to places like we used to, particularly restaurants, the bowling alley, and the movie theater.

But like all 5-year-olds this time of year, he’s concerned about Christmas and in particular Santa Claus. So the question has to be asked. Can Santa get the Coronavirus?

The good news is according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading expert on infectious diseases, Santa claus cannot get Covid! He has too much goodness inside of him.

Even though Santa may be immune, we can spread it by congregating in malls and at local Santa houses while waiting in line to see him.

So this year, locations where Santa usually visits with kids have enacted strict protocols to help reduce the risk. Many are requiring reservations, mandating masks, and even putting up a glass barrier between the kids and Santa. Other places are opting to offer Zoom calls with the jolly old elf.

Santa ClausThankfully my kids already saw St. Nick a few months ago. Back in September, my daughter and I were blessed to go on a field trip with my son’s school and briefly visit with Mr. Claus at a safe distance. Mrs. Claus and Comet even made an appearance. Despite this short encounter, my little man was so worried he would not be able to tell Santa what was on his Christmas list this year that he mailed a letter before Halloween {just to make sure it would get to the North Pole in time}.

However, we were able to secure a time slot to visit Santa Claus in person this month. I have to say I liked the reservation system. I didn’t have to wait in the cold with two little ones asking “How much longer?”. While we were limited to only 5 minutes with St. Nick, I didn’t feel rushed. The only thing I feel we missed out on was the picture with my two kids sitting on his lap and if that’s only negative in a year filled with them I will gladly take it.

Santa ClausLet’s be honest, Christmas might not look how any of us envisioned. Then again few things have this year.

But every child NEEDS Santa, this year more than ever. They need the magic of Christmas, the joy he brings. They need something they can believe in and look forward to when everything around them is uncertain. Most of all, I think parents need it too. We need to have something to celebrate. We need to remember the spirit of giving this season and the joy it brings to others especially at a time when we have to be apart. We need to believe in the good.

So while the holidays may look different this year, Coronavirus is not canceling Christmas or Santa Claus!
